Odette has finally had enough of life and plans to commit suicide. She goes to the rooftop of her favorite building, the library, to jump. Right when she’s about to do it, she notices something fall from the sky. She runs to it, and finds out it’s some sort of otherworldly creature. She takes it home and decides to devote her life to caring for something else as opposed to herself.
When the alien (Seraphine) wakes up, she only has a loose understanding of english, but generally knows what Odette is talking about because her species is intelligent. Odette gives her an apple and she loves it. Within two weeks, she’s learned english, but is always improving. She tells Odette about her past and Odette tells her about hers.
Sam is an old friend of Odette’s, and she happens to know where he works, so she brings Seraphine to him and his mentor Renata’s private lab (owned by a company but not closely monitored like at all, only Renata and Sam are ever there, though there used to be others. the lab does DNA research and medical testing) and Sam takes part in studying her. Renata is mildly interested. Sam, Odette, and Seraphine become a unit. Sam reaches out to someone he knows to be knowledgeable about nonhuman biology, who is Ollie, his blood-sucking ex boyfriend.
Taffi comes into the picture not long after Ollie does. She crash-lands near the lab while Ser is being experimented on and is like “hi guys” and they’re like “hi…?” Taffi recognizes Ser as non-human and is like “omg you’re like me!”
All seems to be well. ser and Odette are falling in love, Taffi is brightening everyone’s day, and Sam and Ollie have gotten back together. However, it doesn’t last forever. Seraphine’s heightened emotions caused by being around her friends so often have alerted her kind. Seraphine is kidnapped by retrievers from her home planet, and Sam, Odette, Ollie, and Taffi save her. Seraphine is thinking “I put yall in danger i gtg back 2 my planet” and she’s distant for a couple days. Then, one night, Seraphine takes Odette outside and is like “i put you guys in danger, i have to go” and Odette is like “NO PLEASE DONT LEAVE ME” and shes bawling and stuff and Seraphine explains that her leaving is an act of kindness, and Odette is like “NO PLS ILY” and then Seraphine leaves. Odette falls back into a depression, her friends help her through, and then after she’s recovered, she decides to go to Seraphine’s planet and get her back. Taffi, being an alien, knows how to travel through space. She can open portals via song, light, and syncronized frequencies. Taffi’s singing provides a way to seraphine’s planet, and the gang (minus Renata, she could not be bothered) travels there to save her, finding her moments away from having her memories wiped by force. They bring her back and all is resolved.

Note: Odette liked Seraphine and Seraphine liked her. They both had a hunch, but Ser was too nervous to ask Odette out, and Odette didn’t wanna hurt Seraphine if her depression got bad again. Part of the reason Seraphine left was to ease the pain of feeling like Odette might not have wanted her.
